What are Limoges Boxes?
Fine porcelain - each box is made of a unique type of fine porcelain originating in the Limoges area of France. The porcelain has been popular with collectors since it was first manufactured over 200 years ago and is of the highest quality.
Miniature, hand-painted, unique - Each box is unique – it is a miniature, hand painted work of art so will never be identical to another box. It is a beautiful item for you to treasure or to give as a special gift to a loved one.
A manageable collection - As the boxes are quite small they will not become a collection that overtakes your home. Whether you just have one or several boxes, perhaps based on a particular theme e.g. sport, a hobby or pastime; they can be displayed easily.
A treasured gift - The boxes are ideally suited as special gifts for all occasions – Christmas, Easter, birthdays, births, christenings, weddings, anniversaries, “good luck”, “thank you” etc.
A Certificate to show each box is genuine - Each box comes to you with a Certificate of Authenticity so you know you are buying a genuine Limoges box. It takes many years for the artists to train fully to paint your box to the high standard required, Of course, there are other retailers selling “Limoges boxes” but many are cheaper imitations.
So many designs to choose from - There are so many designs – more than 4,000 so I can not display them all on the website. The boxes can be of any subject - traditional perfume bottles in a floral box; or a frog on a lily pad; an Earl Grey teapot with a separate tea bag; peas in a pod; a sailing yacht; a golf club or a strawberry gateau. The list is endless and if you have a particular interest but do not see an appropriate box, just telephone or contact me by email and I will do my best to find a box to suit.
Quality to the finest detail - Each box has its own high quality metal hinge and clasp which is fitted by hand. The designs of the clasps vary and are appropriate to the box e.g. a candle clasp for a birthday cake or a yacht on the lighthouse.
Signed by the Artist - Each box also is marked by the artist and has “Peint Main” (hand-painted) on the underside. Some boxes are limited edition and will have a number underneath e.g. 31/50 – number 31 of a total of 50 boxes painted.
And even more surprises - Many of the boxes also have a surprise painted inside the box – e.g. a small bee or flower. Each surprise is appropriate to the box. Some of the boxes also include a separate, tiny, hand-painted porcelain shape e.g. a heart for the love letter or a baby for the baby’s building block. This is what makes the boxes individual and special.
